-@@|8fv1G"R%qP

About The Belief of Chinese PeopleThe spring festival, or say Chinese new year, in 2008 was really a disaster. The whole nation suffered a snow-storm which cut off the electric power support in the 14 southern provinces and transportation system of the country. Most large cities stayed hundreds of thousands of workers who wanted to go back to their hometown to be with their family, and some villages suffered difficulties to survive and needed army to rescue them. Usually, disaster will show us something we ignore most of time but valuable. And, in my opinion, this snow-storm show us all what we Chinese people care about highest in our soul, which I call it belief.

What Chinese belief? If ask this question to some westerns, they would say the Chinese have nothing belief. In their sight, Chinese don’t read Bible, don’t believe in God, neither do any other religions. If ask some Chinese, part will have the same idea to those westerns, while others will think that Chinese consider all religions as superstition, except the Marx’s Communication. Well as my sight, first of all the Communication is just one method or theory we develop our country, but not the belief of all Chinese people all over the country or the world. And truly, in China, we seldom read Bible.

However, does a person have no any belief if he don’t have any public-known behavior of religions? Does a person have no any belief if he don’t believe in any public-known religions in the world? God says He will also love those who don’t believe in Him, but He never identifies that the range of “don’t believe in Him” just contains those people who believe in other religions. And also, does God says that all belief have to be built on one well-known religion, or even extremely, dose God says that all belief have to be built on one formed and systematic religion? The Bible says that God’s messages are all around us, and once we believe, we will get his messages, we will feel his existence. Belief, a simple but hard to describe in human-language, cannot be identified in human religions. Thus Chinese have belief, though the belief still not formed as a religion and we don’t describe God in the phase “God”. 4[EB3tx8s5^c#W$j

Then what is our belief? Just take a look at what people did in that storm disaster. Even now several weeks after, I can still remember one live interview I saw in the special TV report of the snow storm. The journalist asked a woman passenger who was stopped up in a bus on the high way to north, she said. ”No matter what happen, I got to be back home.” And another news is more interesting, on the day before the spring festival, the snows began to melt, and railway station started to open some railway trains, people who had decided to stay in Guangzhou to spend the spring festival knew this gathered to Guangzhou railway station again. We might ask, why are people so longing to go back to spend the spring festival? Can you imagine this view: people stop doing any just go back to home, maybe more specifically, just go back to the hometown where their parents or grandparents live in, taking children and packages, standing in the snows or rains and facing the cold, and waiting for the buses or trains moving. What a view of pilgrimage! What, if we can say it is a kind of pilgrimage, are those people worshiping then? The answer is simple—the family. &^

Family, a word in western may refer to a couple and their underage children. But in China, it usually refers to all members in the family-tree, since grandparents and granduncles, to grandchildren and grandnephews, especially everyone’s parents and grandparents, which in traditional Chinese culture name “High Hall”(you can interpret as the people having the highest seat in the hall of family reunion). In China “go home” both means go back to the house you living and go back to your hometown to be with your parents, and the latter one more significant in important festivals like Spring Festival. “Home”, in Chinese, partly just as “Home” in Bible, is a place people think are pure and secure without any worries or sadness, a place to let us rest and recover into powerful and strong to go down the way of life, and a place to untie our worries and grief to make our mind quiet and calm. In one word, “family” is a concept our soul couch and care. Going back to the place called “home”, especially in the day of Chinese New Year, we think we will throw away all the sad and grey things which happened in passed year and have a fresh new year, a fresh beginning of our lives. What is funny, God says in the temple people should be like one family, everybody should treat each other like sister and brother. But in western, the relationship of real sisters and brothers even parents and aged children are not so close. In China, we don’t have God and church, but we have Family, in which we also feel love, we also have no fear, and we also worship something invisible, something deep in our heart, so deep that, if there is no such huge snow storm, even ourselves can hardly recognize it. Yes, we have belief.

EMb'JUGM

%]2hIA1i _(H Vz
