<P><FONT style="FONT-SIZE: 24px; FONT-FAMILY: Times New Roman"> In the drama Death of a Salesman, the main character is a salesman Willy who believes that he will make it in his business and fulfill his dream to be a successful salesman. But after over thirty years ' endeavor, he is still a common salesman, and what he has earned hardly support his family, eventually, he loses hope for himself, his two sons and even the whole society, and causes the tragedy of committing suicide intentionally for acquiring a sum of insurance for his family. In this article, I am going to analyze the reasons for Willy’s death.</FONT></P>

Willy always holds that he is able to make it in his career as long as he works really hard. But after working in a company as salesman for approximate thirty-four years, the company cruelly takes his salary away, and he just works on commission. For supporting his family, he has to borrow fifty dollars from his neighbor Charley every week and pretend that it is his pay. He is very upset about that, because he works rather hard, just as Linda says:＂he drives seven hundred miles＂a day, but what is the consequence? ＂when he gets there no one knows him anyone, no one welcomes him.＂in Willy’s heart, he just wants to be a good salesman and be loved by consumers, but the market is out of control, he has not been welcomed by consumers, and what he has earned hardly support his family. Because of his terrible business, he is fired by his boss Howard at last. That means he has no opportunity to achieve his dream. Nevertheless, he cannot accept this fact, his temperament is out of control, and he is becoming crazy. In a word, the genuine failure of his business is the major factor for Willy’s death.</FONT></P>

<P><FONT style="FONT-SIZE: 24px; FONT-FAMILY: Times New Roman"> Secondly, Willy’s two sons, especially his old son Buff’s failure in career also leads to Willy’s death. Willy has not succeeded in his career, so he hopes that his sons, especially his eldly son Biff can stand out in business and live up to his expectation. But his two sons also let him down. They are good-for-nothing, his old son Biff ＂not finding himself at the age of thirty-six＂ and has no a formal job, just as himself says:＂all I’ve done is to waste my life.＂ as far as his second son Happy is concerned, he is also a loser. He is just a playboy and makes little money. After their mother’s encouragement, they summon up courage and decide to conduct a great business---buy a beautiful ranch and make effort to make plenty of money. However, since Biff cannot borrow money from his old friend Bill Oliver, the brilliant blueprint which they have made crumbles into nothing, and Willy loses hope for his two sons. At that moment, Willy realizes that nobody can help him accomplish his dream; therefore, he is depressed and disappointed to death.</FONT></P>

<P><FONT style="FONT-SIZE: 24px; FONT-FAMILY: Times New Roman"> Last but not least, Willy’s disappointment about the society contributes to his tragedy. Influenced by American value, he believes firmly that he can be successful in his business as long as he works really hard, so even he is over sixty years old, he still works ten to twelve hours per day to sell his products. However, the situation has been changed; it is becoming increasingly difficult for him to make money in society. As Willy puts it:＂population is getting out of control, the competition is maddening.＂in the fiercely competitive society, he is lack of competitive edge as a salesman, he has not been welcomed by customers and hardly sell anything, he is cruelly fired by his boss Howard in the end no matter he has worked in the company for more than thirty years. That sort of experience reveals the rule that there is no right for a loser to live in the world in a brutal American society, besides; it denies the American myth that everybody can make it. To some extent, it is the society which pushes him to suicide step by step for the society is too cruel and he cannot find his position in the society, hence, he is hopeless for the society and opts to kill himself eventually in order to obtain a great sum of insurance for his family.</FONT></P>

Willy who is ambitious and confident in his career, but after thirty-six years’ endeavor, he is still a common salesman, what is even worse, and he is fired by his boss Howard due to terrible business. He puts hope for his two sons, but they are good-for-nothing and also let him down. He wants to be an excellent salesman and be loved by customers; however, he has not been welcomed by the society, and hardly sold anything. Consequently, he loses hopes for himself, his two sons and the whole society, and then he chooses to kill himself. In this way, the author denies the American myth that everyone can succeed and criticize the cruelty of American society.</FONT></P>
