My Interview to An American Friend Christ

The interview is between an American friend Christ and me Sunimtsai. It took place on last Sunday afternoon. There is the material of our dialogues below. For the convenience of writing, I will use “C” to stand for Christ, and take “S” to stand for me Sunim. Some of the dialogues are deleted since they are not quite useful.@m7n!J`mX'R
S: How are you?
C: I’m very good.6GY1[:TD^
S: OK. My major topic is about what are the images of Chinese in your mind. OK, my first question is that how long have you been in China, and what was your first impression when you came to China.
C: OK. Wait. Wait. One question at a time
S: OK.$|k R@ S_g|
C: I arrived here in China on September 1st. I spent a little more than two months. Two months I think one no two weeks. OK. What is the next question? What is my first impression?;]iY|0y
S: Yeah.J m$CC wb
C: In where, the Unite States is where I’m from. I come from a very small town. I come from a town a town of 20,000 people. So, I come here in China and I see people everywhere. There is the biggest difference for me. And here in TianJin there are 7 million people, and my town is 20,000. I think, it’s close too. So it’s very very different.
S: In every part of China, you can see a lot of people.u0JGS`x6x T
C: Yeah, no matter wherever you are, there are many many people. And what’s the next question?
S: Some people say that Chinese people are conservative and reserved. Do you think that Chinese people are the kinds of people?
C: Well, I think, in some way, Chinese people are more conservative than American, but in some other ways are not. For instance, here in China, Chinese are less conservative when you are talking about relationship between a man and a woman. Because in American it’s very odd ward or not usual to see couples like very close together outside. Like inside they are very close, but outside in park, they don’t show a lot of affection. But here in China you see couples like sit here and be very affectionate toward each other all the time. I see it all the time. So in that respect, China is less conservative. However, on the other side, I think, social believe, or I don’t know how to explain it. I think that Chinese people individually speaking are a lot more conservative than American. Because sometimes you feel like Chinese don’t want to become or to me .It seems that Chinese people sometimes don’t want to be very individualistic so much like in America. It’s very important to be individual, to be your own    person, but it seems like that is not what people want to do here in China. Do you understand?

C: OK. It seems that there is something that China is more conservative and there is something that the United States is more conservative.l m&s'G"auH7[F'N-{2Q
S: You know, lots of Chinese people just like to follow others.NX2C"Z#F |0m%E N`
C: Yeah, I see sometimes.
S: We just want to find the group consciousness. We like to follow together in the restaurant and have dinner together.:y(Sn(iYZn[
C: Yeah, it’s always together you. Like one of my friends’ saying. We would be going to a restaurant and he said to me, make sure you go to the restaurant that has a lot of people in it. A lot of people in it means good food. But in America we do not do like that. We have to search for ourselves to look for by youself for a restaurant that we like. So I find that very interesting, very funny.
S: OK. Since you came to here, do you think that Chinese people are friendly and hospitable?_2_(]lo8@s;I
C: Mm, I think very much. Since I came here to China, I have no problem with everyone. It seems like everyone wants to help me, try to fix things up. I think they have been incredibly friendly and very hospitable to me. So I have been very happy.,N"YSN$Mmq)X
S: Yeah, I think so.7z)o,Wr1kc
C: I think so too. Y Q%P*Pj%b2Z
S: And next question is do you know that Chinese parents always force their children to study or to do something else. I have heard a story about a successful pianist. When he was a child, his parents forced him to play piano, but he didn’t like it very much, because he hardly had time to have fun with friends. So at that time, he hated his parents very much. But now he’ve been very successful and he express his gratitude to his parents very much. And what do you think of that kink of education? And when you were a child, how did you parents educate you?%iY}*?LSc2ZX
C: That’s a very very good question. Personally, I do not, at least, right now at life I don’t agree with that sort of education. Because being from America, you should understand that it’s very very important to do what you want to do. It’s very important for you, for yourself to be happy. And when parents force their children to do something, to do something, to do something until they are very good at it. It’s not the children who’re making the decision, it’s their parents who’re making the decision, and that might help the child foster interest in mind. However, that child should be the one who decides what do want to do. So, I do not agree with that. However, I know it’s that sort of teaching, that sort of education. It’s just something I agree with myself and my parents don’t agree with that either, they allow me to decide what I want to do.
S: Oh, it’s so nice.Tc"hY,O"k
C: Yeah, I like it very much. Sometimes it’s very difficult, both ways are very difficult. But one way your parents are demanding you to learn something, and the other way you should learn. You must understand. You must, well; you must learn how to become an adult. And when you’re making decision for yourself, hat means you’re becoming an adult. What I think, so, if I had children, I don’t think that I will force him to do things like that. 4Nh&nz)b-Z z;^
S: OK. Very good. You mean your parents just encourage you?Z|Y)N!O]z _"h
C: Yeah. They encourage me to do what I want. They say what are you interest in and how can we help you to do more in that, how can we help you make that skills better. For instance, I’m very good at; I like to talk to people. I am in America, I learn Spanish, I’m in China trying to learn Chinese, so they’re helping me learn how to communicate with people, and I’m choosing what I want to do.
S: Did you parents force you to do something ever?3Hz ^t{[]J
C: No, they force me to go to school, but I choose what I to go school for. Like I’M studying political science, so that is what I choose, that is what I want to do.
S: Well,What do you think of Chinese students from some students you’ve met?Y {7Ru,|sIH,Z?f
C: I think that is very interesting. I don’t to, OK, I want to be completely honest with you. I don’t want to too be offensive. So I think that Chinese students at least, at this university, I think that they are very statistic. They study a lot, and have studied a lot for their all lives. And I think because of that, they don’t have as much time to develop their social skills?
S: Because they spend much time on study?(QyH*heK-E
C: Exactly.
S: So they ... \ ns?_n
C: And the problem is that at least, sometimes, it might be some problems. But my concern is that people, for instance, I think maybe western students might be more mature than Chinese students. Because they are more socially develop, and that it’s what I personally believe. But I think Chinese students; their ability to study is absolutely incredible. Because I see students study four, five, six or seven hours everyday, and that’s just incredible. Because that’s not most people do in America,Hardly no one does it in America in the universities.          
 S: You know some students are born in poor family, they just want to study hard to support their family, so they spend so much time on study to get high grade. Because grade means a lot to Chinese students.@NP.zg
C: Yes, yes.
S: And Chinese students always have a lot of assignments, so they have to study hard.
C: Yeah, I can image that.TC(t*c'uF~
S: Mm, image that you are in a company, and you’re taking the vocation, and you boss give you a call and tell you that there is a very important business, and call you back to do the business, and, are you going to come back to do the job?
C: Oh, it depends. First of all, I will ask my boss :“what’re the things that so important?”, that is the first thing. And then I ask, my second thing is| “Is that anyone else I can call or consult to do it instead?” Then if he says:“ I’m the only person who can do it, and it’s very important to get done.” I will go back and do the job. But I want to be able to come back on vocation and have the same time for my vocation.J)sO!z'B8zE
S: That’s so nice. In China, if the boss call you back when you on vocation, you should come back, because the boss has the absolute power to control you, no matter it’s vocation nor not. You know, sometimes it can’t be helped. Cause he’s the boss, if you don’t come back, you might be fired. That is the power distance between boss and employee.
C: Yeah, that happens sometimes. So it is.@)\gb*X%U1?t*tqD

By carrying out interview with an American friend Christ, I have found lots of differences between Chinese and American. S6q{{,gu"b+X
      Firstly, to some extent, American people prefer to show their personalities in public and it is very important for them to be individualistic. Whereas, Chinese people are more conservative and scarily show their personalities in public. When I interviewed Christ, he said to me:“ Sometimes you feel that Chinese don’t want to become or to me it seems that Chinese people sometimes don’t want to be very individualistic so much like in America, it’s very important to be individual, to be your own person. But it seems like that it’s not what people want to do here in China.” Nevertheless, in American mind, in some respects, Chinese are less conservative than American. For instance, Christ think that Chinese couples are very affectionate toward each other all the tome, but in American it is not usual to see couples very close together outside, they just show a lot of affection inside.
         Secondly, generally speaking, the attitude toward children between American parents and Chinese parents is different. American parents always encourage their children to study or do something else, and stimulate them to make decisions for themselves. But Chinese parents often force their children to study or do something else with parents’ power no matter whether they like or not. However, when I asked Chris: “did you parents forced you to do something ever?” He said:” No, they just force me to go to school, but I choose to go school for, like I’m studying political science, so that I choose, that is what I want to do.” This is the encouragement education of America.
       Thirdly, the major difference between American students and Chinese students is that American students care about their social activities outside school more than anything else, while Chinese students focus on study. Besides, American students are very independent, they usually have part time jobs and support themselves; while Chinese students often depend on their parents and just a few students have part time jobs and support themselves. Because more students spend much time on study, and do not have time to do part time jobs as well as develop their social skills. Just as the American friend said: Chinese students study a lot, and have studied a lot for their all lives, and I think because of that, they don’t have much time to develop their social skills.
    Last but not the least, the power distance between boss and employee is different. In America, employee has more freedom to negotiate with boss than the employee in a Chinese corporation. For example, in China, if an employee is taking vocation, and his boss give him a call and demand him back to do business, he will be back right away in most circumstances. Because the boss has the absolute power to control him, if he don’t come back he might be fired. But if that sort of thing happens in an American employee, he will negotiate with his boss, because vocation is very important for American, and he do not hope anyone to destroy it, boss is no exception.     W,d%wX[Z e+Y
(这是我大三上学期跨文化交际的作业,就是就文化差异问题采访老外,这可能是在学校最难的平时作业了,两各月之内完成.还是group assignment.这部分都是我自己完成的.我们组最终定稿将近两万单词,包括采访资料.把老师都吓一跳.这资料是用复读机录音,然后一个单词一个单词听写出来.很费劲的.当然也花了很多时间的.能读完,就不错了,挺长的.LPnvD5Gt,jhF
       很感谢我们学校留学生的配合,当然我是和他约好时间地点的,他很热情,也特别能说,美国人的典型特点啊!

不过说实话，我也尝试跟美国留学生沟通过，他们很能说，但总得来说没什么营养，都是些口水话-Q{_x Z^1i\
很多对于中国的看法流于表面，他们有差不多共同一个特点，就是想不通的东西不去想那么多
用于活跃气氛还是不错的

认真做就很有意思,所以老师都被我们感动,给最高分,而且比其他组多不少分.
不过其他人的贡献更大,AhE0eH(}-c
他们做技术活比我多.比较说做问卷调查,而PPT,我不擅长这些,呵呵

像这样的assignment,两个星期是完成不了了.因为我这不过一小部分.
而且我们老师要求很严.最后期末考挂了班里接近一半的人,这在中国的大学是很少见.,l*a"mzo#z+_ R
因为她考试不给范围,我也不过及格多点.
结果那老师被骂得狗血淋头.E"k(~(r(g!D d
她老想实施她理想状态下的国际标准.这可能吗?
不过她英语的确挺厉害的.

其实我们有些课上得也跟国外差不过.
就是主要看平时,期末占的分到不太多了.有些老师是留学回来的,西化了.t1M7GbU?N
比较说public speaking .就是看平时的演讲的表现.
上课就是演讲和听演讲后自己发表评论.
